Slow and Steady

Anyone frustrated with your spiritual walk?  Sometimes I get so upset that I am not further along that I am…I want the fast sprint rather than the slow and steady plod along this long and narrow road.  But that’s not how it works.  As Horatius Bonar said, “God’s trees grow slowly.  God’s processes are not always rapid.  His greatest works rise slowly. Swiftness of growth has been one of man’s tests of greatness; not so with God.  His trees grow slowly; the stateliest are the slowest.”  Psalm 1:3 says that the Godly man “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”  The great Oak grows slow and steady…

What is my point is saying this?  My point is to keep going and to not lose heart.  Slow and steady wins the race.  This is not an excuse for laziness or for a lack of urgency, but it is an encouragement to keep plodding along through all the hills and valleys of life.  God is working…just keep going.  Spiritual growth does not come easy, and it does not come like a magic pill.  It comes through hard work and steady progress in this spiritual marathon.  So – keep going, persevere, stay faithful, stay in the word, keep praying, keep fellowshipping with other Christians, and never quit.  May God build many great Oaks in the faith here at Faith Community Church.
